Overview

47 ANKA Supported Art Centres form a dynamic network of Aboriginal owned and governed art enterprises across Northern Australia. Many of these Art Centres have been formally affiliated with ANKA for over three decades.

ANKA provides services, support and networking opportunities for its affiliated Art Centres and for its membership of Aboriginal artists and arts workers.

ANKA members are individual Aboriginal artists and arts workers who have been approved by the ANKA board. Members must be Aboriginal people who are at least 18 years old and normally reside within the ANKA regions. They can work through ANKA Supported Art Centres or independently.

Under the Rule Book with the Office of the Registration of Indigenous Corporation (ORIC) to become a Voting Member of ANKA - an artist or arts worker must complete a membership form. This means that once they are accepted Voting Members can vote on resolutions at meetings and stand to be an ANKA Director. However, this does not mean that other artists or arts workers cannot receive help or services from ANKA.  Any artist or arts worker who is a member of an ANKA supported Art Centre can still receive assistance from ANKA.

Becoming a Member

To become a member an artist or arts worker completes a simple form that is then presented to the ANKA board of Directors for approval.  Approval is automatic if the artist or arts workers is already a member of their Art Centre.

For Individual Members - artists who do not belong to an Art Centre, they must complete a form and provide examples of their work and a short story explaining their aims, vision and work history. The ANKA board then discuss and approve their membership request.

New Art Centres are also encouraged to contact ANKA ask about applying for affiliation.  To be eligible they must be run by an Indigenous board, complete the necessary forms and provide information on their artists and how they are governed.  The ANKA board also assesses these applications.
